Bache, Jules S. (Semon) (1861–1944) financier, art collector; born in New York City. He was educated at Charlier Institute, New York City, and in Frankfurt, Germany. He began his financial career as a clerk for Leopold Cahn & Co. (1880), and by 1892 was head of the banking firm under the new name of J. S. Bache & Co. He made a fortune as a broker, served on many boards, and, assisted by the art dealer, Joseph Duveen, amassed an impressive collection of Old Master paintings. The collection, including works by Titian, Rembrandt, and Velazquez, was given to the Metropolitan Museum in 1944.
