Here we have both genuine signal counts and background counts, and the total random error is then the square root of the sum of the squares of the error on the background and of the error on the genuine photon count.
l haplotypes was rather mild with only doubling from the background counts while expressions of haplotype 5q35 were rather downregulated with respect to background counts on concentrations of 2 and 3[micro]g/mL.
Because the study population was presumed fertile, a small decrease in sperm count might not be detectable against high background counts, and could explain the null results reported by the authors.
