Bain, Joe S.

(1912–  ) economist; born in Spokane, Wash. He identified and quantified "barriers to entry" into non-competitive industries by measuring factors such as initial capital requirements, threat of price cutting by established firms, and product differentiation. Except for one year at Harvard University (1951–52), his entire career was spent teaching at the University of California: Berkeley (1939–75).
