Bainville, Jacques (zhäk băNvēl`), 1879–1936, French historian and journalist. A nationalist and a royalist, he was one of the founders and the foreign editor of the royalist daily, Action française. His brilliant and concise History of France (1924, tr. 1926), although highly debatable in its nationalist thesis, is an eloquent apology for the monarchic tradition in France. His other writings include Napoleon (tr. 1934), The French Republic, 1870–1935 (tr. 1936), and Dictators (tr. 1937, repr. 1967). How to thank TFD for its existence?
