Bakhurin, Ivan Mikhailovich
Born Oct. 1 (13), 1880, in Zaraisk; died Oct. 2, 1940, in Leningrad. Soviet scientist in the field of mine surveying. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1939). Professor at the Leningrad Mining Institute. Bakhurin developed a theory for interpreting magnetic prospecting data and methods of magnetic photomicrography for mine-surveying purposes. Through his initiative, the Central Scientific-Research Mine-Surveying Bureau (later the Central Scientific-Research Mine-Surveying Institute) was organized in 1932; he remained its scientific director until the end of his life.
