Bakushinskii, Anatolii Vasil’evich 

Born Apr. 16 (28), 1883, in the village of Verkhnii Landekh, Vladimir Province; died Jan. 9, 1939, in Moscow. Soviet art historian, pedagogue, and museum consultant.

Bakushinskii studied at the University of Tartu from 1907 to 1911 and at the P. G. Shelaputin Pedagogical Institute in Moscow from 1912 to 1914. A professor at Moscow University from 1924 to 1939, he worked in Moscow at the Tsvetkov Gallery between 1917 and 1925 and the Tret’iakov Gallery between 1924 and 1939. He developed a method for training tour guides and the principles of aesthetic education, including that of children. Bakushinskii was a researcher of Soviet Russian and folk art; he took part in the revival of artistic crafts in Palekh and Mstera.
