Balaklava, Battle of (1854)

fought near Balaklava, which was a base of the British troops, on October 13 (25) between the Russian and the Anglo-Turkish troops during the Crimean War of 1853–56. The Russian troops occupied redoubts 3 to 4 km northeast of Balaklava and repelled the counterattack of the British cavalry. But this small tactical success was not exploited because of the failure of A. S. Menshikov, the commander in chief, to assign enough troops for this action; the task of cutting off the enemy from his base was not achieved.
