Baldwin, Evelyn Briggs (1862–1933) Arctic explorer; born in Springfield, Mo. He was the superintendent of city schools in Kansas (1887–91) and an observer for the U.S. Weather Bureau (1892–1900). He made a daring but unsuccessful attempt to reach the North Pole (1901–02). He served in minor government posts (1918–33).
