In southwestern AL, east of Mobile, forms part of border with Florida; organized Dec 21, 1809 from Washington County (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For Abraham Baldwin (1754-1807), American clergyman and U.S. senator from GA (1799-1807); founded Franklin College (now University of Georgia).

    In central GA, northeast of Macon; original county; organized May 11, 1803 from Creek Indian lands and Hancock, Washington, and Wilkinson counties. Name Origin: For Abraham Baldwin (1754-1807), member of the Continental Congress, and U.S. senator from GA (1799-1807).
