Ballia (bŭl`yə), town (1991 pop. 84,758), Uttar Pradesh state, N central India. Situated on a rich alluvial plain, Ballia is a district administrative center and an important market for rice, sugarcane, and oilseed. There is some light industry. Changes in the course of the Ganges River destroyed the old town in the years from 1873 to 1877, and a new town was created in 1900. | In discussing the Statutes of 1409 Tanzini comments upon the roles of the governmental councils, legislative procedures, and the suspension of laws, the responsibilities of ambassadors (which are both broader and more extensively articulated than their medieval precedents), election rules, the roles of Otto di Guardia, of the Dieci di Balia, and the reiteration and reoriented application of the Ordinances of Justice. Vincenzo Mosca from Italy's RAI Trade reported that, although the market was "quiet," he was nevertheless happy because RAI's two key movies, La Balia and Tierra del Fuego, were very well received, even though he was limited to promotion and pre-sales. Thus there were issues between this mercenary army and its employer; negotiations took place between the captains of the Black Bands and the agents of the republic, and the resulting wealth of source material (detailed reports to the "Ten" by Lorenzo di Niccolo Martelli, the republic's commissario, and others, preserved in the Dieci di Balia fondo of the Florentine State Archives) has enabled Arfaioli to investigate this mercenary army and its interactions with its employer. |
