Balikpapan

Balikpapan (bä`lēkpä`pän), city (1990 pop. 344,405), E Borneo (Kalimantan), Indonesia, on an inlet of Makasar Strait. An important seaport and oil center with refineries, it is connected by pipeline with the oil fields of Samarinda. Timber is also exported.

Byline: JAKARTA: Indonesia's Pertamina has renewed a plan to upgrade its Balikpapan refinery with Dubai-based ETA Star and Itochu Corp of Japan, a spokesman for the state energy firm said.
Utami (Bogor) has collected data on woody plants endemic to Balikpapan and surroundings.
The 13 cities involved are Bandar Seri Begawan in Brunei; Balikpapan, Manado, Pontianak and Tarakan in Indonesia; Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Labuan and Miri in Malaysia; and Davao City, General Santos, Puerto Princesa and Zamboanga in the Philippines.
