Balikpapan (bä`lēkpä`pän), city (1990 pop. 344,405), E Borneo (Kalimantan), Indonesia, on an inlet of Makasar Strait. An important seaport and oil center with refineries, it is connected by pipeline with the oil fields of Samarinda. Timber is also exported.

According to the Balikpapan Orangutan Society, "it is estimated that four to five orangutans are killed for every baby reaching the market.
The first was held in Denpasar in January 1990, the second in Bandung in July 1991, the third in Jogjakarta in July 1992, the fourth in Surabaya in August 1993, the fifth in Bukit Tinggi in October 1994, the sixth in Balikpapan in October 1995, and the seventh in Batam in December 1996.
