Baluchi (bəl `chē), language belonging to the Iranian group of the Indo-Iranian subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages. Balochior BaluchiAny member of a group of tribes speaking the Balochi language and inhabiting the province of Balochistan in Pakistan and neighbouring areas of Iran, Afghanistan, Bahrain, and the Punjab (India). Some 70% of the total Balochi population live in Pakistan, where they are divided into two groups, the Sulaimani and the Makrani. Mentioned in 10th-century Arabic chronicles, they probably came originally from the Iranian plateau. Traditional Balochis are nomads, but settled agricultural existence is becoming more common. Ignoring the CBM spirit, India asked the Musharraf government to go easy on the Baluchis. Most of the leaflets were threatening for which reason many Afghans, especially Pashtuns and Baluchis, found them insulting. It truly boggles the imagination to believe that under such circumstances an Iraqi bureaucrat was sitting calmly in Kuwait's Interior Ministry taking down the flight plans -- including the itinerary and final destination -- of otherwise non-descript Baluchis fleeing Kuwait. |
