urban-type settlement; center of Balykshi Raion, Gur’ev Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Located on the left bank of the Ural River, 4 km south of Gur’ev. Population, 21,300 (1968). Balykshi is a center of the fishing industry. The Gur’ev fish-canning combine, a ship-repair plant, and a construction-materials combine are located there. There is also a fishing-industry technicum.
