Band Saw

a machine used for sawing logs, beams, boards, and wood materials. Its cutting member (also called a band saw) is stretched between pulleys. Band saws are made with horizontal or vertical saws. One of the pulleys of the band saw is the driving pulley (in vertical machines, the lower pulley); the other pulley is equipped with a device for tensioning the saw. According to purpose, band saws are classified as heavy-duty machines, which are used for lengthwise sawing of logs and blocks; medium-duty machines, for lengthwise cutting of boards and blocks; and light-duty (carpenter’s) machines, for lengthwise and assorted other sawing of wood and various wood materials.

Heavy-duty band saws are equipped with mechanisms for holding, turning, and longitudinal or transverse movement of the logs being sawed. Twin band saws make possible simultaneous cutting of a board and two slabs from the same log. Medium-duty band saws have a feed mechanism with a dividing scale mounted on the work table. By changing the inclination of the work table of light-duty band saws, boards and fiberboard may be sawed at an angle to their plane.

Band saws are characterized by high cutting speeds (up to 50 m/sec) and narrow cuts (0.7–2.4 mm). The feed rate for heavy-duty band saws can be as high as 150 m/min; on such machines it is possible to select the cutting pattern.
