Bandar Seri Begawan (bän`där sĕr`ē bĕgä`wän), city (1991 est. pop. 46,229), capital and chief port of the sultanate of Brunei, of which it is also the business and commercial center. Its manufactures include furniture, textiles, handicrafts, and building materials. Petroleum and natural gas are processed there. It is the site of the Royal Ceremonial Hall and the Brunei History Center. It was formerly called Brunei.
Bandar Seri Begawanformerly Brunei TownCity (pop., 2001: city, 27,285; 2002 est.: metro. area, 74,700), capital of Brunei. Lying along the Brunei River near its mouth on Brunei Bay, it is a trade centre and river port. Heavily damaged during World War II, it was largely rebuilt; newer buildings include the largest mosque in eastern Asia. Bandar Seri Begawan the capital of Brunei. Pop.: 64 000 (2005 est.)
