In south-central TX, northwest of San Antonio; organized Jan 26, 1856 from Uvalde County. Name Origin: From the Spanish for 'flag'; reason unknown.

Area (sq mi): 797.54 (land 791.73; water 5.81). Pop per sq mi: 25.20.
Pop 2005: 19,988. State rank: 117. Pop change: 2000-20005 13.30%; 1990-2000 67.10%. Pop 2000: 17,645 (White 84.10%; Black or African American 0.30%; Hispanic or Latino 13.50%; Asian 0.30%; Other 5.50%). Foreign born: 3.90%. Median age: 41.30.
