Actaea

 

a genus of plants of the Ranunculaceae family. They are perennial herbs with large, double trefoil leaves. The flowers are in clusters; the fruits are berry-like. There are approximately ten species known in the northern hemisphere. In the USSR there are three species; all are toxic. The most common is baneberry (A. spicata), which grows in the shady forests of the European part of the USSR, the Caucasus, Western Siberia, and Altai.
