Born Nov. 10, 1848, in Calcutta; died Aug. 6, 1925, in Barrackpore. Figure in the Indian national liberation movement. Graduated from the University of Calcutta.

In 1876, Banerjea founded the Indian Association in Bengal, a political organization of the liberal-moderate wing of Indian bourgeois nationalism. He was one of the most prominent leaders of the Bengali national movement. He played a large role in the unification of Indian national organizations and was one of the founders of the Indian National Congress (1885), in which he was one of the leaders of the moderate wing. With a group of moderates, he left the National Congress in 1918 and established the Federation of Liberals.
