(brothers). John was born Apr. 3, 1798, in Kilkenny; died there on Aug. 13, 1842. Michael was born Aug. 5, 1796, in Kilkenny; died Aug. 30, 1874, in Dublin. Irish writers.

Together the Banim brothers wrote Tales, by the O’Hara Family (vols. 1–3; 1825–26), which contained realistic sketches of village life in Ireland. John Banim was the author of The Nowlans (1826), in which the customs of the Irish village are sympathetically portrayed. He also wrote the historical novel The Boyne Water (1826) and the three-volume novel The Denounced (1830), which is about the lawlessness of the Irish and persecution of Irish Catholics. The Irish rebellion of 1798 is sympathetically portrayed in Michael Banim’s historical novel The Croppy (1828).
