In northeastern GA, north of Athens; organized Dec 11, 1858 from Franklin and Habersham counties. Name Origin: For Richard Banks (1784-1850), a noted local surgeon.

Pop 2005: 16,055. State rank: 102. Pop change: 2000-20005 11.30%; 1990-2000 39.90%. Pop 2000: 14,422 (White 91.90%; Black or African American 3.20%; Hispanic or Latino 3.40%; Asian 0.60%; Other 3.10%). Foreign born: 2.10%. Median age: 35.20.
