Baramidze, Aleksandr Georgievich
Born Mar. 27, 1902, in Lanchkhuti. Soviet literary critic; academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1961). Baramidze graduated from the department of philology of the University of Tbilisi in 1925. He was first published in 1927. He has written works in Georgian and Russian about the history of ancient Georgian literature and has published scholarly-critical texts of ancient Georgian authors. Baramidze’s most significant works are Essays on the History of Georgian Literature (vols. 1–4, 1945–64); the monographs The Narrative Poems of Shota Rustaveli (1958), Sulkhan-Saba Orbeliani (1959), and David Guramishvili (1955); the book Ancient Georgian Literature (Fifth to 18th Centuries) (1954, with Academician K. S. Kekelidze); and On the Question of Literary Interrelationships in Ancient Georgia (1960). Baramidze is the director of the Sh. Rustaveli Institute of Georgian Literature of the Academy of Sciences of the Georgian SSR (1966). He has been awarded the Order of Lenin, the Badge of Honor, and medals.
