Baranga, Aurel

    0.03 sec.
Baranga, Aurel

Born June 20, 1913, in Bucharest. Rumanian playwright.

Baranga’s play Crabgrass (1949) concerns the participation of the intelligentsia in building socialism. The play Black Years (on which he collaborated with N. Moraru, 1951) concerns the struggle of the Rumanian Communists in the underground. The comedy The Lamb in Rage (1954) is directed against bureaucracy. The events of August 1944, when the people cast off the yoke of fascism, provide the theme for the play Arch of Triumph (1955). The play Recipe for Happiness, or What Nobody Talks About (1957) affirms the moral principles of socialist society. The same themes are treated in the comedies Adam and Eve (1963), Be Careful, Christopher (1964), and Saint Mythicus the Blessed (1965). Baranga depicts the struggle against routine, bureaucracy, and group psychology through his sharply satirical scenes of conflicts. He was awarded the State Prize of the Socialist Republic of Rumania (1951, 1954).
