Baranof Island

 

an island in the Alexander Archipelago (USA, state of Alaska). Area, 4,162 sq km. Baranof Island has mountains with maximum elevations of 1,432 m, covered with coniferous temperate rain forests. There is fishing (Sal-monidae) and timber logging. The largest settlement, port, and fishing center is Sitka (Novo-Arkhangel’sk), with a population of 3,237 (1960). The island was named in honor of A. A. Baranov.
