Barkhudarov, Stepan Grigor’evich
Born Feb. 23 (Mar. 7), 1894, in Baku. Soviet linguist and specialist in Russian philology. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1946). Barkhudarov is a specialist in the field of Old Russian, its lexicology and lexicography. In 1932 he became a professor at Leningrad University. Together with methodological specialists, he compiled a textbook entitled The Russian Language (vols. 1–2,1929). He was the editor of the journals Russkii iazyk v shkole (The Russian Language in School, 1938–46) and Russkii iazyk v natsional’noi shkole (The Russian Language in the National School, beginning in 1957). In collaboration with S. P. Obnorskii, he published An Anthology of the History of the Russian Language (part 1, 1938; part 2, issue 1, 1949, issue 2, 1948). He was the editor of A Dictionary of the Modern Russian Literary Language (vols. 1–17, 1948–65). Barkhudarov has been awarded the Order of Lenin and two other orders, as well as medals.
