Barkov, Aleksandr Sergeevich 

Born May 13 (25), 1873, in the village of Pokrovskoe, Epifan’ District, Tula Province; died Dec. 28, 1953, in Moscow. Soviet physical geographer. Doctor of geographical sciences (1935). Member of the Academy of Pedagogical Sciences of the RSFSR (1944). Honored Scientist of the RSFSR (1945).

From 1897 to 1925, Barkov taught in secondary school. Beginning in 1926 he was a professor in institutions of higher learning in Moscow; from 1931 to 1950 he taught at Moscow State University. In collaboration with A. A. Kruber, S. G. Grigor’ev, and S. V. Chefranov he composed textbooks, handbooks, and methodological guides for the teaching of geography in secondary school. A fifth-grade textbook written by Barkov and A. A. Polovinkin went through 18 editions (1935–54). Barkov did research on karstic formations and on the geography of various countries. He was awarded the Order of Lenin and the Order of the Red Banner of Labor. His major works, besides those already mentioned, are A Reference Dictionary for Physical Geography (1940, 4th ed. 1958) and Physical Geography of the Regions of the World: Africa (1953).
