Name Origin: For Alanson H. Barnes (1818-90), judge of the federal district court (1872-81). Originally for John A. Burbank (1827-1905), governor of Dakota Territory (1869-73). Area (sq mi): 1513.23 (land 1491.65; water 21.58). Pop per sq mi: 7.40. Pop 2005: 11,075. State rank: 13. Pop change: 2000-20005 -5.90%; 1990-2000 -6.10%. Pop 2000: 11,775 (White 97.50%; Black or African American 0.50%; Hispanic or Latino 0.50%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.50%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 40.60.
