In southeastern ND, west of Fargo; organized as Burbank County by the 1872-1873 territorial legislature (prior to statehood) from Cass County; renamed Jan 14, 1875. Name Origin: For Alanson H. Barnes (1818-90), judge of the federal district court (1872-81). Originally for John A. Burbank (1827-1905), governor of Dakota Territory (1869-73)
