Barney, Nora Stanton (b. Blatch) (1883–1971) civil engineer, architect, suffragist; born in Basingstoke, Hampshire, England (daughter of Harriet Stanton Blatch, granddaughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton). She moved to New York City as a girl. The first female civil engineering graduate from Cornell University, she began in 1914 to design and build houses, and after 1923 became a prominent developer of exclusive houses in suburban Connecticut. She led the fight in New York State for women's suffrage and was a lifelong activist on behalf of feminism and peace. |
