Coextensive with Cape Cod, in southeastern MA; organized Jun 2, 1685 from Old Plymouth Colony. Name Origin: For Barnstaple, Devonshire, England. Original meaning was 'Bearda's staple or post,' or 'post to which a warship was moored.' Folk etymology changed it to -stable.
