Baron, Salo (Wittmayer) (1895–1989) educator, author; born in Tarnow, Galicia (now Austria). Educated in Austria, he came to the U.S.A. in 1927. He held the first Miller Chair of Jewish History, Literature and Institutions at Columbia University (1930–63). He edited the Jewish Social Studies quarterly, and wrote the 18-volume Social and Religious History of the Jews (1937–52). A member of many educational and government organizations, he testified about the history of European anti-Semitism at the 1961 trial of Adolf Eichmann.
