Barakpur (băr`əkpôr), city (1991 pop. 137,261), West Bengal state, NE India, on the Hugli River. The city is a military station. Fifteen miles (24 km) from Kolkata (Calcutta), it was formerly the suburban residence of the British viceroys of India; a well-known park stands on the site. Bengali troops in Barakpur mutinied in 1824 when ordered to participate in the Burmese War. The Indian Mutiny Indian Mutiny, 1857–58, revolt that began with Indian soldiers in the Bengal army of the British East India Company but developed into a widespread uprising against British rule in India. It is also known as the Sepoy Rebellion, sepoys being the native soldiers.
