In south-central KY, east of Bowling Green; established Feb 20, 1798 from Warren and Green counties. Name Origin: Descriptive of the treeless prairie. It is believed the Indians burned off the growth to facilitate buffalo hunting.

Area (sq mi): 499.93 (land 490.97; water 8.96). Pop per sq mi: 81.60.
Pop 2005: 40,073. State rank: 24. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.40%; 1990-2000 11.90%. Pop 2000: 38,033 (White 93.80%; Black or African American 4.10%; Hispanic or Latino 0.90%; Asian 0.40%; Other 1.10%). Foreign born: 1.20%. Median age: 38.00.
Income 2000: per capita $16,816; median household $31,240; Pop below poverty level: 15.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,285-$22,780.
Unemployment 2004: 4.20%. Change from 2000: -1.30%. Median travel time to work: 19.90 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 19.90%.
