Barrot, Odilon 

Born July 19, 1791, in Villefort; died Aug. 6,1873, in Bougival. French political and governmental figure; attorney.

Barrot participated in the preparation of the July Revolution of 1830. In the 1830’s and 1840’s he was a leader of the moderate liberal opposition gauche dynastique, which demanded broader participation of the industrial bourgeoisie in the administration of the state. He was prime minister from December 1848 to October 1849. Barrot’s cabinet was the first government under the presidency of Louis Napoleon and signified the accession to power of the monarchist Party of Order. In 1849, Barrot played a large role in organizing military intervention against the Roman republic. He was chairman of the State Council from 1872 to 1873.
