Barrow, (Edward Grant) Ed (1868–1953) baseball manager/executive; born in Springfield, Ill. After managing the Detroit Tigers in 1903–1904, he led the Boston Red Sox to a World Series championship as their manager in 1918. He became general manager of the New York Yankees (1921–45), where he shaped the famous pennant-winning teams of Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Joe DiMaggio. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953.
