Barrymore, Lionel

Barrymore, Lionel (1878–1954) stage, film, and radio actor; born in Philadelphia. Brother of Ethel Barrymore and John Barrymore of the great acting family, he was known as a fine character actor. His film career included 15 Dr. Kildare movies, as well as You Can't Take It with You (1938). He is well remembered for his depiction of Scrooge in the 1936 radio presentation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol. Radio became his primary career after he was confined to a wheelchair. Listeners in the 1940s knew him as The Mayor of the Town.
