Barthé, Richmond (1901–89) sculptor; born in Bay St. Louis, Miss. An early African-American artist, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago (c. 1920–24), and at the Art Students League, New York (1931). Based in St. Anne, Jamaica, he was a painter who became a sculptor of expressive bronze works, such as Boxer (1942). How to thank TFD for its existence?
