In south-central IN, south of Indianapolis; organized 1821 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For Gen. Joseph Bartholomew (?-1840), officer wounded at the Battle of Tippecanoe (1811) and IN state senator (1821-24).

Area (sq mi): 409.36 (land 406.84; water 2.52). Pop per sq mi: 180.80.
Pop 2005: 73,540. State rank: 20. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.90%; 1990-2000 12.20%. Pop 2000: 71,435 (White 93.00%; Black or African American 1.80%; Hispanic or Latino 2.20%; Asian 1.90%; Other 2.10%). Foreign born: 3.80%. Median age: 36.20.
