In central KS, southwest of Salina; organized Feb 26, 1867 from Ellsworth County. Name Origin: For Clara Barton (1821-1912), Civil War nurse and first president (1881) of the American Red Cross. The only KS county named for a woman.

    On the southwestern border of MO, north of Joplin; organized Dec 12, 1855 from Jasper County. Name Origin: For David Barton (1788-1837), MO jurist, legislator, and U.S. senator (1821-31).
