Stone, Barton Warren, 1772–1844, American clergyman of Kentucky. With four other ministers he withdrew from the Presbyterian Church and in 1804 began to form new churches whose members called themselves simply Christians Christians, name taken by the followers of several evangelical preachers on the American frontier, notably James O'Kelley, Abner Jones, and Barton W. Stone , all of whom were antisectarian.

Of Scottish lineage, both were born in Ireland and educated at the Univ. of Glasgow. Both were Anti-Burgher Presbyterians, a division opposed to the discipline of the main church.

Stone, Barton Warren (1772–1844) Protestant religious leader; born in Port Tobacco, Md. He studied law, then underwent a religious conversion and became an evangelist. He held several Presbyterian pastorates before breaking with that denomination to establish several independent churches in Kentucky and Ohio. His "Christian" churches eventually merged with the Disciples of Christ. In 1826 he founded the periodical Christian Messenger, and varied his editorial duties with evangelical activities in Illinois and Missouri.
