In east-central TX, southeast of Austin; organized Mar 17, 1836 (prior to statehood) from Old Mexican Municipality. Name Origin: For Felipe Enrique Neri (?-1828), Baron de Bastrop, who established a colony of Germans in TX (1823); first commissioner of Austin's colony (1824).

Area (sq mi): 895.92 (land 888.35; water 7.57). Pop per sq mi: 78.70.
Pop 2005: 69,932. State rank: 48. Pop change: 2000-20005 21.10%; 1990-2000 50.90%. Pop 2000: 57,733 (White 65.40%; Black or African American 8.80%; Hispanic or Latino 24.00%; Asian 0.50%; Other 10.60%). Foreign born: 8.10%. Median age: 35.40.
Income 2000: per capita $18,146; median household $43,578; Pop below poverty level: 11.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,415-$21,692.
Unemployment 2004: 5.60%. Change from 2000: 1.60%. Median travel time to work: 37.10 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 59.30%.
