Bates, (Theodore Lewis) Ted (1901–72) advertising executive; born in New Haven, Conn. He worked in advertising agencies after graduating from Yale, then founded his own New York advertising agency (1940). The agency grew into the fifth largest in the world through pioneering television advertising in the 1950s and by creating aggressive campaigns for major consumer product manufacturers like Colgate-Palmolive. He created Anacin's headache hammers and the Wonder Bread slogan, "Builds Strong Bodies 12 Ways." How to thank TFD for its existence?
