On the central western border of MO, south of Kansas City; organized Jan 29, 1841 from Cooper County. Name Origin: For Frederick Bates (1777-1825), secretary of LA Territory (1806), governor of MO Territory (1809-10), and state governor (1824-25).

Area (sq mi): 851.37 (land 848.47; water 2.90). Pop per sq mi: 20.10.
Pop 2005: 17,027. State rank: 64. Pop change: 2000-20005 2.20%; 1990-2000 10.80%. Pop 2000: 16,653 (White 96.80%; Black or African American 0.60%; Hispanic or Latino 1.10%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.90%). Foreign born: 0.90%. Median age: 38.40.
Income 2000: per capita $15,477; median household $30,731; Pop below poverty level: 14.50%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $21,190-$23,378.
Unemployment 2004: 6.90%. Change from 2000: 0.80%. Median travel time to work: 31.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 43.80%.

One county (Clinton County, Missouri) was added in 1993 and four more (Linn County, Kansas; Bates County, Missouri; Caldwell County, Missouri; and Cass County, Missouri) were added in 2003.
Both Jackimovicz (1970) and Gentile (1976) found channel sandstones overlying tilted Marmaton limestones in Bates County, western Missouri.
