a former natural boundary near the village of Chetvertinovka, Vinnitsa Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. During the War for the Liberation of the Ukrainian People (1648–54) Ukrainian troops under the command of Bogdan Khmel’nitskii on May 22–23 (June 1–2), 1652, surrounded and annihilated a 20,000–man detachment of the Polish Army under the command of the Crown Ataman M. Kali-nowski. This was one of the decisive blows against Polish aristocratic domination in the Ukraine.
