Battle Cruiser

a subclass of cruisers with powerful guns. They appeared before World War I. Only a few battle cruisers were built. They had displacements of 20,000–42,000 tons, were armed with six to nine turret guns of 280–380 mm caliber and up to 20 113-mm guns, and traveled at 29–30 knots (53.7–55.5 km/hr). Battle cruisers were used in World War I, and three such cruisers that were retained in the British Navy also saw service in World War II. After the war the last surviving battle cruiser was scrapped.
