Battle of Carthage State Park Location: Garrison exit off US 71 in Carthage, on the north side of East Chestnut Street, next to Carter Park. Facilities: Undeveloped except for interpretive shelter. Special Features: Site of the final confrontation in a 12-hour Civil War battle which began north of the town on the morning of July 5, 1861, preceding the Battle of Bull Run by 11 days. Missouri's Governor Claiborne Fox Jackson commanded the 6,000 Southern troops that forced General Franz Sigel and his 1,000 Union troops down the stagecoach road to Sarcoxie. The site remains as it was when the Southern troops camped there after the battle.
