Batyr

    0.01 sec.
Batyr

Bahadur (Turkic, “brave man,” “hero,” “athlete,” from Old Turkic bağatur, “brave warrior”), a title that was bestowed upon individuals for military service among the Turkic and Mongol peoples. A feudal aristocracy arose among the batyrs. The term “batyr,” which came into use not later than the sixth century, is widely used in the folklore and everyday life of the Turkic peoples. Heroes of the Great Patriotic War of 1941–45 are referred to as batyrs in the contemporary literature of certain peoples of the USSR.
