Batyrai
Born 1831, in the village of Urakhi, Dagestan; died 1910. Darghin poet. One of the initiators of the democratic and realistic trend in Dagestani literature. Batyrai was born into a peasant family. His poems were collected only after the October Revolution and published in 1928. Batyrai portrayed village laborers (the song cycle “On Life”) and the brave men of the nation (the song cycle “On a Hero”) and raised his voice in defense of the female mountaineers who were deprived of their rights (the song cycle “On Love”).
