Bayamón (bäyämōn`), city (1990 pop. 202,103), NE Puerto Rico, a residential, commercial, and industrial city. Founded in 1772, it is one of the oldest settlements on the island. It produces foods, metals, clothing, pharmaceuticals, and automotive parts. BayamónMunicipality (pop., 2000: 224,044), northeastern Puerto Rico, part of the metropolitan area of San Juan. Puerto Rico's first settlement, Caparra, was founded nearby in 1508 by Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León. Established as a town in 1772, it is now a manufacturing centre for clothing, furniture, automotive parts, and metal products. Educational institutions include Bayamón Central University.
