Bayard, horse, in chivalric romance

Bayard (bā`ərd), Ital. Baiardo (bäyär`dō), in chivalric romance, a bay horse, remarkable for his spirit and for his unique ability to fit his size to his rider. He appears in the 12th-century French epic Renaud de Montauban and in later tales of Roland Roland , the great French hero of the medieval Charlemagne cycle of chansons de geste, immortalized in the Chanson de Roland (11th or 12th cent.).
