Baikonur
a launching site for spacecraft in central Kazakhstan; formerly the centre for the Soviet space programme, now leased from Kazakhstan by Russia

Baikonur

one of the largest space installations in the Soviet Union; located in the Karaganda Oblast, of the Kazakh SSR. Many launch complexes, technical posts, and measuring points for the execution of a broad program of space research were built at Baikonur. Many measuring points are situated along the installation’s routes. The first artificial earth satellite in the world was launched from Baikonur, and it was from here that Iu. A. Gagarin made the first manned space flight and that the first space flight by a woman—V. V. Tereshkova—was launched. Many other space research launchings were carried out at Baikonur.
