Beads
small ornaments that are pierced through and used as necklaces. Since ancient times, beads of various materials have been widespread among most of the peoples of the world. Stone and bone beads appeared as early as the Neolithic age, and metal beads appeared in the Bronze Age. With the invention of glass in ancient Egypt, glass beads began to be widely used. In the Middle Ages glass beads were produced in Venice, Rus’, Middle Asia, and elsewhere. From the 11th through 14th centuries spherical beads of rock crystal and carnelian beads in the form of two pyramids joined at the bases (so-called bipyramidal beads) were used in Rus’. Carnelian was the favorite stone of many peoples for beads, but the form given to it varied from country to country. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
